Lunch at Munch

Munch
24-01 29th Street, Astoria

This new storefront sandwich shop/cafe is a welcome addition to the 24th Avenue area, across from the Beer Garden. Even though Munch is brand new, it already has achieved an informal neighborhood feel. The employees and patrons seem to know everyone in the hood. While there is only a handful of seats inside, there is an outside table and bench, that they will happily add a table to for your convenience. The staff in general could not be any sweeter or more accommodating. While I agree with the Foodista’s review that the name is dirty sounding, at least they did not call it The Munch Box or something worse. Anyway, the food is quite good. On my first visit I enjoyed an iced coffee and the Elvis, which is PB & J, bananas and walnuts on grilled white bread, which tasted exactly like the bread in a perfect grilled cheese sandwich. There was also a bacon option that I declined. The Elvis was simultaneously warm and cool, sweet, soft and crunchy. It’s a bargain at $4. In fact the whole menu, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, is amazingly priced at $5.50 or less! That includes eggs, salads, sandwiches, sliders, quesidillas, and much more. On my second visit I ordered a sandwich and salad to go. The sandwich was grilled chicken, avocado and cheese all melty on a long roll. It was simple and satisfying. The salad was mixed greens, walnuts, chicken, good cheddar cheese and balsamic dressing. A $12 salad in Manhattan, but only about $4-$5 at Munch. While there are many delis and cafes in the neighborhood, for price, quality, and friendliness, I will keep Munch in heavy rotation.

I Feel Ya, Ovelia

Ovelia
34-01 30th Avenue, Astoria

We stumbled across this new cafe a few weeks ago and had a very pleasant lunch. Unlike other 30th Ave cafes, Ovelia is modern but unassuming. There are several tables out front with a mix of metal and wood and the interior is stark and immaculate. The service was low key, but efficient and quite welcoming. The menu had many options for lunch: salads, sandwiches, entrees, what you would expect from a cafe. We had two of the more interesting: a lentil and bacon salad and the daily special pulled pork sandwich with excellent sweet potato chips. The salad was bright and the flavors complemented each other well. The pork wasn’t award-winning, but fine for a regular lunch spot.

Ovelia definitely aims to please. The menu has something for everyone and the dinner menu has classic Greek fare as well as many of the lunch items. I would imagine it also being a good brunch spot or a place to grab a cappuccino and people watch on 30th. I am not sure about the night scene however, and have a feeling it might turn into a trendy bar scene. Either way, you can’t go wrong with a decent neighborhood standby.

Follow Me to the Cafe….

Follow Me Cafe
145 East 62nd Street (Lex/3rd), NYC

After working on the Upper East Side for the second year in a row, I’ve come to realize that lunch options are ridiculously over-priced and hardly appetizing. Sure, I’ve found a great local coffee shop by Hunter College that makes wonderful chai lattes and has incredible homemade soups, and the street meat surrounding the college always smells tantalizing, though I’ve yet to try any yet, and I definitely support my local fruit vendors…..but when it comes to a great sit-down, reasonable establishment that suits my style and decor and not one of an uppity east sider, it’s taken me a while. Luckily, I happened upon the “Follow Me Cafe” located on East 62nd off of Lexington. Now, it is not super-cheap…..nothing in this neighborhood really is, but the decor is awesome……very small, seats only 18 people, but it’s dark and comforting (you’ll be shocked by how deeply you sink into the cushions on the chairs!). The best part of this place is the food. They serve fresh sandwiches and salads and wonderful crepes. It is not only open for lunch, it serves breakfast starting at 8am and serves food all day until around 10pm at night. The prices range from $8 through $13, but the ingredients are fresh and interesting, like goose pate with caramelized onions, or a panini with proscuitto, black mission figs, gorgonzola and rosemary oil. All sandwiches are served with a nice amount of organic greens and a lovely light salad dressing. When we went, we tried the balsamic grilled chicken with arugula, roasted bell peppers and avocado spread and the ratatouille crepe. Both were wonderful and the crepe was surprisingly large and filling. They have a lovely sweet crepe section for desserts and a nice menu with coffee drinks. Overall, I will definitely return to try other offerings on the menu and feel fortunate to have found a wonderful cafe with great food that does not make my skin crawl!
