Ovelia
34-01 30th Avenue, Astoria

We stumbled across this new cafe a few weeks ago and had a very pleasant lunch. Unlike other 30th Ave cafes, Ovelia is modern but unassuming. There are several tables out front with a mix of metal and wood and the interior is stark and immaculate. The service was low key, but efficient and quite welcoming. The menu had many options for lunch: salads, sandwiches, entrees, what you would expect from a cafe. We had two of the more interesting: a lentil and bacon salad and the daily special pulled pork sandwich with excellent sweet potato chips. The salad was bright and the flavors complemented each other well. The pork wasn’t award-winning, but fine for a regular lunch spot.

Ovelia definitely aims to please. The menu has something for everyone and the dinner menu has classic Greek fare as well as many of the lunch items. I would imagine it also being a good brunch spot or a place to grab a cappuccino and people watch on 30th. I am not sure about the night scene however, and have a feeling it might turn into a trendy bar scene. Either way, you can’t go wrong with a decent neighborhood standby.
