Sweet Basil (fka Khao Homm)
3928 61st Street, Woodside, NY
Occasionally it is wonderful to step outside of our normal town of Astoria to see what else is happening in Queens. We really wanted to get to Sripraphai in Woodside, and we were all arranged to get there, but luckily our legal-eyed friend caught that it is closed on Wednesdays. Who closes on a Wednesday night?? Apparently, the top rated Thai restaurant in all of the five Boroughs does. So, we decided on its sloppy-seconds neighbor. Sweet Basil is literally down the street from Sripraphai and some on Chowhound even seem to prefer it to the apparently over-crowded top choice. The menu is far more limited, but the service was courteous and efficient. We all ordered an appetizer and a main course. The Hubster and I tried the Rama Curry and the Garlic Duck with the Vietnamese Sausage salad as a starter. Blair and Jeff tried the Drunken Noodles which was a signature dish, as well as potstickers. The Garlic Duck was by far the standout dish. The duck was crispy and cooked to perfection. The sauce was garlicky and sweet and sour. The noodle dishes were good, although not great. The noodles were a bit soggy and the Rama curry lacked personality. The Drunken Noodles were tasty and spicy, but again, were missing a bit of a wow factor.
Overall, we enjoyed our experience and found the prices reasonable and the portions fair. If you go, I strongly recommend the duck……it would be worth a trip back alone!
